A Work in Progress

Monday, December 5th, 2011

When working with clients on a one to one basis or in workshops, groups etc. One of my favourite sayings is that we are all a “work in progress”.  Being a “work in progress” somehow gives you permission to try new things have new experiences and takes away any pressure from having to get it all right.  A “work in progress” means there is room for improvement, room to expand, develop and grow.

They say December 1st is the beginning of winter, a time when nature takes time to slow down, some animals hibernate to pass the winter in a resting state, and for me November, December and January are the months where I take time to reflect, review and re-energise.

REFLECTION:  My year started off well, however in June I broke my ankle, tibia and fibular and the Universe brought me to a halt.  On reflection I am proud of myself for using the time wisely, reading, writing, meditating, healing.  Enjoying the gift of visits from friends who managed to find time in their busy lives, my gratitude goes out to them.   Physically for the last 5 months I have been a “work in progress” learning patience whilst giving my body time to heal.  Sometimes my patience has been severely tested and when it has, I have taken a step back and observed myself to see who, and what I am struggling to deal with.

REVIEW:  Each year I like to allocate myself a budget which I give myself permission to spend on attending Workshops, Conferences, Trainings.  This again is me being “a work in progress”.  My passion is people and life long learning and invariably my frequent escapes from everyday routines is always an adventure.

At the beginning of the year I started a 12 month Core Training with the International Association of Conscious and Creative Writers.  This was an online training with monthly assignments and a monthly conference call.  I would not have believed how easy it is to create wonderful and supportive friends ONLINE.  Like minded people who are also “a work in progress”  who happily give you feedback on your work and encourage you to step out of your comfort zone.  If you are an aspiring writer you can find IACCW founded by Julia McCutchen on Facebook.

Next year we will be holding this space as a virtual writing cafe, a writers working group supporting and encouraging each other to use it as a safe space to step into our authorship.  How wonderful is that.

In October I re-united with some friends for the first time in years and attended the Hay House “I Can Do It” conference. This was an event where I again had the opportunity of seeing how the connection of Science and Spirituality is developing and growing.  Met some fabulous people, listened to many knowledgeable speakers and found my own needs nurtured.

Last month I attended a two day Huna – Chillout Workshop facilitated by Gary Plunkett who again you will find on Facebook.  A small group who over two days blended together at all levels.  A spiritual and healing weekend which I shall be repeating in March 2012 when Gary has agreed to facilitate a workshop in Doncaster.   More about it in the New Year so watch this space.

RE-ENERGISE:  As a self-employed business woman reflection, review, re-energise is very important.  The more you learn and develop yourself the the more the benefits are felt by the clients and people you work with.   Next year I will be working differently.  It is my intention to facilitate more workshops, arrange for other facilitators to do workshops (most definitely on things I would like to learn more about), and create a new online presence.  My new online presence at this moment in time is a “work in progress” but I will let you know about it as soon as it is up and running.

If you punish yourself, beat yourself up for things you feel you should know, or could have done better. STOP IT!  Allow yourself to be “a work in progress”. Give yourself the opportunity of embracing life in a joyful, conscious and creative way.  You will be amazed at the results!

Start local (you) think global (others).

Quote: PEACE – it does not mean to be in a place where there is no noise, trouble or hard work. It means to be in the midst of those things and still be calm in your heart.

As a Coach I quite often ask my clients what is it you want to accomplish from your actions.   Often they want to change the world, make a difference.    There is a lot of talk about changing the world and to me this is a tall order but  like many others I would like to think there was potential for leaving this world in a better place than I find it today.  There is also a lot of talk these days of us all being one, not separate or individual units but all connected.   I totally agree with this, however, when it comes to changing the world I believe that changing the world and making a difference are two different things.  When it comes to changing the world I truly believe we have to start  local with changing ourselves first.  Learning new ways to communicate, think, behave ulitmately  impacts on others creating a  ripple effect which then becomes global.

For instance if you take an apple and drop it on the floor a few times it’s skin may be become bruised or even broken, it might lose some of it’s juices and become soft and soggy in parts and not fit to eat.    However if you take a knife and peel the apple and slice it up, at the core it is still a perfect apple.   Life is all about bumps and bruises, ups and downs, and we  have this enforced daily by the media and could easily start thinking our world is a terrible place and we can do very little to make a difference.

What if we can make change by first of all changing the way we think about our world local.  There are 168 hours in a week and I can remember a time when I tried to fit in 250 hours into a week or that was what it felt like.  What I was actually doing was a bad job but what I was hoping to achieve was a good job. It didn’t work, I ended up totally exhausted and stressed which resulted in foggy thinking, lack of concentration, resentment that no matter how hard I worked I was not getting the results I wanted.

Today I talked to a client who was not only trying to expand 168 hours into 250 hours, but her son was trying to do the same thing with 5 extra evening activities after school which extended their day into non-stop 12 hour days!   No wonder she walked through my office door flopped into a chair and declared I don’t know what is wrong with me.   I was in that space once upon a time, I know how she feels, I also know that the difference that makes the difference is changing yourself first before you can have any affect in changing the world around you.  This involves taking a look at our conditioning and our beliefs of how people expect us to behave.

I started making changes that first of all made a difference in my world, in others words I started local but my thinking was global.  If I could change some of my habits and behaviours create new strategies that nurtured me ,local,  then everyone connected to me and beyond would benefit, global.

Here is how I started and suggested that my client may want to give it a try.   Firstly,  I took a look at my diary in Outlook on the computer.  I then decided to use the colour coding option.  Training Days  = blue, Community Group facilitation = Orange, One to One coaching = Yellow, Family commitments = Purple, and I became Green.   Each week I committed to three appointments of 1 hour for me.  This was used initially to create new strategies for decreasing stress, whether it was catching up with a girl friend for coffee, going for a swim, walking, reading, or having a declutter in my home office and other rooms to create new energy and flow throughout the house.  Each week I could easily see on my diary sheet the Green coding and knew there had to be three Green appointments which at a glance kept me on track.

I recently attended the Hay House “I Can Do It” Conference in London where Science & Spirituality came together, and whilst the many speakers  delivered their message in different ways the message was the same.  We are all connected.  Our world is in crisis, but a new world is emerging before our eyes, a world of co-operation not competition but for this to happen we all must play a part. We are at a tipping point in our existence and we’ve been on Earth much longer than acknowledged by conventional history.  Gregg Braden in his new book “Deep Truth” states “when new discoveries cast doubt on existing beliefs, it’s time to rethink the beliefs!” Now is the time for us to change our beliefs on how we can contribute in this global change.

I have attached a link and if you feel inclined take a little time to chill out and discover what this means I hope you enjoy it.   http://www.scienceofpeace.com/document.html

Coming away from the Conference I wondered how we as individuals can make a difference and have come to the conclusion that if each of us took 30 minutes per week to help someone, listen to someone, to connect with someone new, then this small act local could eventually ripple becoming global.  If we are all connected then the connection would be sustained becoming stronger and stronger and maybe our world will begin to be a better place. After all, that is what we all want….. right?

So I have put a new colour on my outlook  diary which is red a colour I associate with power, and 30 minutes per week I am going to focus on making a connection by either supporting, or listening, or doing something that makes a difference, because I for one want to be part of a new emerging world of co-operation and peace.  How about you?  Would love to hear your comments.

Identity Shifts

Thursday, June 9th, 2011

In the last five months I have worked with many clients and there seems to be a regular pattern emerging, especially amongst my female clients, who feel that they are being guided into making choices, whether it is about their relationships, or their careers.  Quite often when we come to what seems like a crossroads, or turning point in our lives, we encounter resistance from those nearest and dearest to us.

Take our nearest and dearest, who think they know us inside out.  All they really know is the identity you have taken on as a daughter, sister, mother, partner, whatever.  Take our work colleagues, all they really know is the identity which shows up day after day at the workplace. We end up having so many identities, we forget who we really are.   One day we wake up and feel a nudge to do something else, or feel slightly out of balance, and what do we do? Well, based on my work for the last ten years, NOTHING.  Why?  Because somehow we become what is mirrored back to us.

As a child I remember that question, “What do you want to be when you grow up?”  I can remember quite clearly that I wanted to be a famous textile or dress designer, and when it came to leaving school I still wanted to be a textile or dress designer, and would have loved to have gone to Art College. However, my Mum had different ideas.  “If you want to go to College then you will go to Secretarial College, and end up with a “Proper Job”.   I realise now that my mother, and siblings,  did not know how to handle the creative side of my personality, and because of that it was buried for many many years.  When we are surrounded by people who cannot see us or cannot acknowledge what they see, we are assailed with self-doubt, so we try and fit the mould that they expect us to fit.

Parts of us knows we are more than they see, and parts of us fears we are less than we hope. I believe there comes a time for everyone, a coming out so to speak, to show up and reveal ourselves.   Having been a Coach for more than 12 years now, I have uncovered the most wonderfully creative human beings, those that have been playing small because of what has been mirrored back to them.

Many times I hear the words “I don’t know who I am anymore”, and this is how I know that there are parts which have yet to be discovered, parts that have yet to step into the light, and parts that are waiting to be listened to.   If any of these words resonate with you, believe me you are not alone.  Taking time to dip out of the busyness of life, to nurture your spirit, can be as easy as, a daily  meditation practice  or a daily walk to name just two options, both can help you deal with the ups and downs of an identity shift.

Based on the above, and with my clients in mind, the following words evolved.

HERE I AM

Here I am,  Here I stand for all to see.

Yet do they see the real me?

Somewhere inside I know, I am waiting for the green light – GO!

I feel I am in first gear, but somehow stuck there with fear.

Can I really be me? what then will they see?

I listen  to voices within, I recall the dreams and hear the screams,

Whose screams are they? mine or theirs?

I feel the call to stand in the light, I try to do it with all my might.

But is it me they want to see, or the one they think I should be.
